About Gaining Ground

Gaining Ground is an interagency program based in South West Sydney which aims to address the needs of children living in families where a Parent or Caregiver is affected by Mental Health Problems. Young carers (9-16yrs) have the chance to attend Getaway Camps, which provide specific activities in which children can have fun, explore their feelings, enhance their coping skills, increase their resiliency, communication & social skills,& self esteem. The Getonboard Sailing Adventure Weekends are coordinated sailing training weekends for children who have displayed leadership qualities on a Getaway Camp. The Adolescent Program (12-18yrs) is a 3 day program run during school holidays, which aims to develop young people's coping skills & enhance resilience, develop/ improve skills in stress management & communication, enhance self esteem, develop supportive relationships with peers, & increase understanding of their parents mental illness, causes and treatment.
