The NSW Department of Juvenile Justice supervises and cares for young offenders in the community and in detention centres. It provides youth justice conferences for young offenders referred by police or the courts. Services include; assessment reports prepared to assist courts in determining sentences, court directed supervision of juvenile offenders placed on good behaviour bonds, probation, community service or parole orders, support for young people with problems seeking bail or remanded in custody, the provision of counselling and developmental programs as an alternative to detention with a focus on alcohol and other drug misuse, generalist counselling, group work and living skills
