Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Women's Council - Mid West
The NPY Women's Council is a resource support and advocacy organisation for its members residing in over thirty Aboriginal communities in the cross-border region of WA, SA and the NT. The Council covers a vast area of some 350 000 sq km. The Council also delivers a wide range of health, cultural and community development services and initiatives to families in the region. Tjanpi (pronounced 'J-um-Py') is the Aboriginal women's basket weaving project which started in the Central Western Desert region and spread to Ngaanyatjarra communities in WA. The NPY Women's Council initiated the program and continues to support it through marketing, training and exhibitions of the artworks. More communities are becoming involved in this project .Tjanpi is now a small enterprise which produces baskets, beads, bush medicine and bushtucker at wholesale prices. All their products are freighted worldwide, with all profits from sales going back into further development of the project.
