The Public Guardian is appointed by NSW Guardianship Tribunal. The Public Guardian makes decisions in areas such as Accomodation services and consenting to medical and dental treatment. The Public Guardian also advocates for the services and support needed by people under guardianship. The aim is to support the rights of adults with disabilities to make their own life decisions wherever possible.

At the end of this time a review will be held by the Guardianship Tribunal to decide whether a guardian is still needed. The Office of the Public Guardian will send information about organising Enduring Guardianship.
