Wesley School for Seniors

The Wesley School for Seniors offers over 110 courses each week for the over 50's in a relaxed, informal atmosphere. Courses include language courses, Academic speech and drama courses, dance, exercise, music and arts & crafts courses. The school also offers computer courses including Introduction and Intermediate training in Windows 95 and Introduction to the Internet.

Provides opportunities for older citizens to maintain self-esteem and independence, and avoid loneliness and isolation through work, education, sport and social activities. Anyone 55 years plus can attend the centre daily to participate in activities such as aerobics, indoor bowls, pools, darts and regular outings including shopping bus. Beehive buses pick up from stops at Surry Hills and Town Hall and take participants directly to the centre. Volunteers are needed to do mailing and packaging. This is light sit down work. Breakfast, morning tea and a two course lunch are provided free of charge to all participants and volunteers.

RTA provides advice and determines eligbility for: driver licensing, vehicle registration, road rules and mobility parking scheme (MPS) permits. MPS provides parking concessions and access to appropriate parking spaces in proximity to essential services for people with mobility disabilities. For parking permits clients need to obtain from RTA a medical assessment form to take to their GP. For older drivers RTA has available The older Driver's Handbook which aims to give drivers information about how to determine whether they are still driving safely. Annual medical assessments and driving test apply to all drivers from 80 years and over.

Provides access to interest groups and computer training for residents in the Sutherland Shire. Through 'peer training' members can learn computer skills. Monthly meetings, courses, activities and a newsletter are also provided. Classes are held 5 days a week. Meetings are held at the Caringbah Baptist Church. One Day Therapy Program aims to keep you as young on the outside as you feel on the inside. As part of the Tuesday program we have incorporated the 7 week "stepping on serious". This program will offer gentle stretching and strengthening, toning exercise and a variety of other activities that will provide plenty of stimulation. It is a great way to meet new people and have fun while keeping fit, strong and entertained. An Occupational Therapist and Physiotherapist will teach about many aspects of falls prevention, including some simple exercises that reduce the risk of falling.
