DES (diethylstilboestrol or "stilboestrol") was a synthetic oestrogen prescribed to pregnant women from 1938 up to the 1980s to prevent miscarriage. Problems arose during the 1970s when it was found DES causes certain cancer risks and reproductive problems to the women who took the drug in pregnancy and their DES-exposed children of that pregnancy. DES Action Australia-NSW provides information and support for people effected by DES.
