Volunteers have time to focus on the human side of pallative care. They are ordinary people who have received special training in communication/listening/grief & loss, that enable them to offer emotional and practical help that enables adults and children with a life limiting illness to remain independent for longer than otherwise possible. Home-based volunteers are able to offer a wide range of services: being with someone while their carer goes out, visiting the family, writing letters, minding children, helping with life enhancement projects or memory work gentle massage the list goes on. BAM-T

CO, USA

What is BAM-T? Boxing provides a cathartic release that few other physical activities provide. Focus while punching, awareness of balance and deep breathing inherently creates a mindful activity. The control, discipline and empowerment can uncover your unique strengths and support deep therapeutic processing. Paul works with new clients individually or in very small groups (3 max) to Introduce them to the program. After making sure that he understands each clients' specific trauma during an initial 30-minute one on one, he walks them through what they will hear and ensures that they are doing the techniques in a way that is safe and will not injure them. Each session starts with a guided meditation. Clients are guided through a visualization exercise for a few minutes and are invited to access an uncomfortable memory that they would like to reprocess to the extent that they are comfortable. Clients warm up and walk through the program, and then it is time to do something demanding and empowering that brings the client back into the present. He has recorded an audio program that gives prompts to throw, evade or block strikes. Like a typical boxing trainer, he will hold up the mitts for clients to strike, move the mitts toward the client for them to evade, or tap the client's arm when they are prompted to block. Paul then takes them through the workout, which requires close attention and rapid reaction while holding trainers' mitts for clients to strike as he rotates among the group. After the rounds are complete, a cool down and checkout completes the therapy. Over the three years Paul has been doing this therapy, he has seen and heard from clients that it helped them with a variety of challenges including: PTSD General Anxiety Trauma Depression Addiction Social anxiety Who is it NOT for: People just looking for a boxing workout, this is therapy with a licensed counselor.
