MATES Programme

MATES is a programme that the Australian Red Cross has been running since 1997. It involves trained volunteers becoming friends with people who have a diagnosed mental illness. The programme is free of charge although some activities may incur a small fee. Regular meetings are held between the mates, volunteers and the coordinator.

Bipolar Support Group

TAS, Australia

Bipolar support group meets monthly on the fourth Monday of the month from 1 pm to 3 pm. Confidentiality and privacy are respected. Guest speakers, coping skills, outings and information sessions are part of the groups activities.

This program offers support to people whose lives are extremely affected by severe mental illness by providing opportunities, support and services that will help people reconnect with the community. People will work with their own Personal Helper and Mentor.

The Mental Health Respite Programme has been designed to develop opportunities for Carers of people with a mental illness to have a short-term break from their caring role. This programme focuses on the Carer, giving them the support they need. To be eligible a Carer must be providing some form of care on a regular basis.

Sage Hill Family and Friends Service provides support for Carers of people with a mental illness. This support includes information on mental illness, treatment options and strategies to help Carers. Outreach service is available. No need for formal diagnosis of mental illness needed for referral.

Sessions include exploring coping skills, information sessions and guest speakers. Meetings are held fortnightly on a Tuesday at the Emmanuel Centre. Phone for dates. Group also has access to the ARAFMI library of books, tapes and videos for loan to members for a small membership fee. All information shared during the sessions is and remains confidential.

The Respite Service supports families of people with mental illness by providing flexible respite choices with a recovery focus. Depending on family, friends and carers needs, respite may be provided in the home or the community. This is a fee for service program.
